When this Community Hospital set out to implement a new EmPATH (Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment, and Healing) Unit, the goal was to fundamentally change the experience of behavioral health care in the emergency setting. Traditional emergency departments are often loud, crowded, and overstimulating environments, and conditions that can intensify distress for patients experiencing mental health crises.
The EmPATH unit was designed to do the opposite. Through thoughtful spatial planning and carefully selected furniture, the hospital created an environment that immediately communicates calm, dignity, and safety while supporting rapid stabilization and recovery.
The Community Hospital sought to create a different model, one that was designed to support de-escalation and emotional regulation, restore patient autonomy and dignity, improve staff–patient interaction and safety, encourage movement and social connection, and maintain durability and operational efficiency in a high-use setting.
Furniture selection became a central part of achieving these goals.
The space features organic forms, soft lines, and communal layouts that help patients feel safe and grounded from the moment they enter.
Calming Recliners provide supportive seating for patients undergoing stabilization. Unlike traditional hospital beds, recliners encourage a more upright, regulated posture while allowing patients to rest comfortably without creating a long-stay atmosphere.
Movement-supportive seating and open communal arrangements promote gentle mobility and social interaction, helping patients transition from isolation toward community reintegration.
In addition, dedicated calming spaces equipped with comfortable seating allow individuals to step away from stimulation and self-regulate when needed.
Together, these furniture elements help shape an environment that feels therapeutic rather than restrictive.
The arrangement of seating areas allows staff to maintain clear lines of sight while encouraging natural interaction between patients and caregivers. This fosters trust and reduces agitation in shared seating areas and activity spaces encourage patients to engage in social interaction.
These design choices help patients transition from crisis toward reintegration with their community.
This EmPATH unit demonstrates how furniture and environment can play a powerful role in behavioral health care.
By replacing restrictive, institutional settings with thoughtfully designed furnishings and layouts, the hospital created a space that benefits patients, staff and emergency departments.

“Furniture selection was critical. The organic forms bring a sense of calm and dignity to the space, elevating the environment beyond traditional units and setting a new standard for what EmPATH design can achieve.”
