Griffin Health partnered with architect firm SLAM Collaborative to deliver a new EmPATH (Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment and Healing) unit, carefully designed to support patients in crisis through a calming, safe, and highly functional environment.

SLAM initially approached Pineapple, drawn to the distinctive aesthetic and proven performance of its behavioural health furniture. To gain a deeper understanding of how the products would perform in practice, the design team visited Pineapple’s Michigan showroom alongside representatives from Griffin Health. This hands-on experience allowed them to fully explore the materials, construction, and subtle design details that contribute to both safety and comfort – key considerations in a high-acuity mental health setting.

Following a comprehensive evaluation, the team was particularly impressed by how Pineapple’s furniture seamlessly balances robust safety features with a warm, non-institutional appearance. The designs demonstrated how carefully considered forms, materials, and finishes can reduce environmental stress while maintaining durability and compliance.

The collaboration led to the development of several bespoke solutions tailored to the needs of the space. Notably, the Levo reduced-ligature recliner was adapted to include a Velcro-backed headrest pillow for added comfort, while the Zen ottoman was reimagined as a practical footstool, showcasing a creative, user-focused approach to design that prioritises both flexibility and ease of use.

Working closely with Pineapple’s engineering team, the final scheme also incorporated Ryno dining chairs and Snug modular seating. The Snug range proved particularly impactful, offering a softer, more residential aesthetic while allowing staff to easily reconfigure layouts to suit varying patient needs. Meanwhile, the popular Ryno dining chair was selected for its ergonomic comfort, strength, and long-term durability – qualities essential in demanding healthcare environments.

The result is a thoughtfully curated EmPATH unit where every design decision contributes to a sense of safety, dignity, and calm. By integrating well-designed, purpose-built furniture into the overall environment, the space not only meets clinical requirements but also positively influences how patients and staff experience and interact within it.

Feedback from Griffin Health has been overwhelmingly positive, with the client praising the space as both visually welcoming and highly functional – ultimately supporting improved patient outcomes and greater confidence among staff.
