The Santa Cruz County Children’s Crisis Center represents an important investment in pediatric behavioral healthcare, bringing crisis stabilization and residential treatment together under one roof to provide timely, compassionate care for children and adolescents experiencing mental health crises.
Located within a repurposed two-story building in the heart of Santa Cruz County, California, the facility has been thoughtfully designed to provide a secure, therapeutic environment while remaining easily accessible to families and emergency services. As part of the County’s wider behavioral health strategy, the center strengthens access to integrated mental health services and creates a dedicated space where young people can receive immediate support when they need it most. Throughout the facility, Pineapple’s reduced-ligature furniture solutions, including Levo Reduced-Ligature Recliners, Ryno® Beds, Scorpio Anti-Vandal Mattresses, and Ryno® Dining Chairs, help reinforce the balance between safety, comfort, and therapeutic design.
The first floor combines administrative and clinical spaces for Santa Cruz County Behavioral Health Services with the Children’s Crisis Stabilization Program. Providing immediate assessment and short-term intervention, the unit offers a calm, structured environment where children experiencing acute emotional, psychological, or behavioral crises can be safely stabilized and connected with ongoing care. Levo Reduced-Ligature Recliners provide supportive seating for therapeutic conversations and moments of quiet reflection, while the Ryno® Dining Chairs create welcoming communal spaces that encourage routine, connection, and positive social interaction.
The second floor is home to the Children’s Crisis Residential Program, providing a voluntary short-term stay in a setting intentionally created to feel welcoming, reassuring, and far removed from traditional institutional healthcare environments. Patient bedrooms feature Ryno® Beds paired with the Scorpio Anti-Vandal Mattresses. Together, they provide secure, durable sleeping solutions that maintain the residential feel central to trauma-informed design. Comfortable communal areas, dedicated therapeutic spaces, and residential-inspired interiors work together to promote recovery, emotional regulation, and a greater sense of dignity throughout each young person’s stay.
Furniture plays an important role in shaping spaces that feel both safe and welcoming. Throughout the Children’s Crisis Center, Pineapple’s reduced-ligature furniture solutions have been carefully selected to enhance therapeutic care while contributing to a warm, child-focused environment.
Across therapy, consultation, and quiet spaces, Levo Reduced-Ligature Recliners and Snug Plus Modular Seating provide supportive, comfortable furniture for therapeutic conversations, clinical assessment, and moments of calm. Their thoughtful design enables clinicians to deliver care in environments that prioritise both safety and dignity.
Communal areas feature Ryno® Dining Chairs that encourage shared meals and positive social interaction, while Boden Bean Bags offer relaxed, informal seating that helps children and young people feel more at ease while supporting emotional regulation and engagement. Carefully selected colours, including Warm Terracotta and Moonwalk Gray, soften the clinical aesthetic, creating environments that feel calm, reassuring, and more residential in character.
Every element of the Children’s Crisis Center has been carefully considered to benefit both the young people receiving care and the clinicians who support them. Flexible treatment areas, dedicated therapy rooms, thoughtfully designed staff spaces, and carefully selected furniture work together to create an environment that promotes safety, dignity, and healing.
The Santa Cruz County Children’s Crisis Center demonstrates how purposeful behavioral healthcare design can positively influence the experience of children, families, and care teams alike. By combining therapeutic architecture with carefully considered behavioral health furniture, the project creates an environment where comfort, compassion, and thoughtful design help lay the foundation for recovery and hope.
